Crisis Communication Training for International Education

Prepare your team to communicate clearly, quickly, and responsibly when it matters most.

Global Vistas Consulting provides crisis communications training designed specifically for education abroad, international education, and globally focused organizations. This practical, scenario-based training helps teams strengthen their crisis communications approach before they are operating under pressure.

Led by Shawna Parker, Founder & CEO of Global Vistas Consulting, the training draws on more than two decades of experience in international education, marketing, communications, media relations, and crisis response strategy.

WHAT YOUR TEAM WILL LEARN

Crisis communication is most effective when teams have a shared understanding of what needs to happen before, during, and after a high-pressure situation. This training gives participants the principles, tools, and practice needed to communicate with greater clarity, consistency, and care when the stakes are high.

The training is designed to be practical and highly relevant to the realities of international education, study abroad, and global programs. Participants will examine how crises unfold across multiple audiences, including students, families, institutional leaders, international partners, media, and the broader public. They will also consider how timing, tone, channel selection, internal coordination, and message discipline affect trust and response effectiveness.

The full training includes five core modules: crisis communications principles and best practices, case study analysis, crisis PR and media response, internal communications and workflow planning, and scenario-based crisis simulations. Each section is designed to help participants move from understanding key concepts to applying them in realistic situations.

This training can be delivered as a full workshop or adapted to meet the needs of your team, institution, or organization. Depending on your goals, the session can focus on foundational crisis communications, media response, internal workflows, message development, tabletop exercises, or a customized combination of topics.

MODULES

CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS PRINCIPLES & BEST PRACTICE

Participants build a shared understanding of crisis communications in the study abroad and international education context, including what makes these situations complex, how communication decisions affect trust, and why preparation matters before a crisis occurs.

CASE STUDIES

Teams review real-world crisis communication examples international education contexts, identifying what worked, what created confusion or risk, and what lessons can be applied to their own internal planning.

CRISIS PR & MEDIA RESPONSE

Participants learn how to determine when, how, and by whom media inquiries should be handled. The session includes guidance on talking points, message discipline, transparency, stakeholder sensitivity, and reputation management.

COMMUNICATIONS & WORKFLOW PLANNING

This module helps teams clarify who needs to know what, when, and through which channels. Participants review best practices for email, web, social media, internal coordination, tone and voice, templates, approvals, and the ethical use of AI in crisis communications.

SCENARIO-BASED CRISIS SIMULATIONS
